Autism and Down Syndrome in the Education System

Hi There, I am a mother of a DS-ASD child who will be starting "big school" in September. I was curious if there are any parents out there that have already started this process and if they can offer any advise on how to work with the teachers? The school that my daughter will attend has never had a child like her and I am concerned that they are not going to understand her needs. Any assistance will help. Thanks!

go to the school of your choice early as possible let them know about your child so they have enough time before September to get everything in place before your child starts school. It makes it easier for everyone.

Thanks Mojo, I have actually already done exactly that. I met with the new principal in September and we will start the process in January, that is when school intake starts for our region. I guess I am more concerned about how the teachers will respond to her as a person and also her daily needs. I know that she will get an EA and hopefully one that has worked with children with either Down Syndrome or Autism (I know that is a big hopefully). It is the teachers of the school that truly will mold the other children and acceptance is going to be key. I am not one to worry about what other people think however I have a son that also attends this school and the bottom line is kids will be kids and if the teachers are not accepting then who will help the other kids understand? Perhaps I am worrying about something that may or may not happen, I am curious if you have come across this situation? Thanks

I have a son with autism who entered school this past fall.  I created a 3 fold pamphlet for the children in his class to help them understand my son as well as autism.  I also did up a letter to the parents introducing my son and talking a little about autism.  The letter and pamphlet were approved by the princpal and were sent home with each student in his class.  It was a great tool as it really helped the other children understand my son and has helped to raise awareness. It's wonderful to see how accepting the children and staff are.

What a great idea. I never even thought of that and I already have something put together on her two disabilities for a fundraiser we are working on. Thanks so much that really helps!
