5 year old with outbursts only at home

My 5 yr old son (middle child) is very socially shy, he is in SK and very well behaved and doing well academically.  The problem lies at home, he has huge temper tantrums and screems, yells and stomps at my husband and I.  He is good with his siblings.  My husband and I are happily married, professionals and he does not attend daycare.  Unfortunately I can only ignore so much before we are all taking temper tantrums in response to his behaviours.  Can anyone give ideas on how to tame the wild beast?????

Hi I have some suggestions for you. Your child is acting out and needs to be taught to use his words to express how he is feeling. You can help by stating his emotions for him e.g. " You sare really angry aren't you?" Get him talking. Also buy Playdoh , have relaxing play activities and music for him, library Cds are good.. I have an article on relaxation for children which I will send a link to you. Stryroam and golf tees can be pounded with a rubber hammer from the Dollar store. Catch him being good and make comments on it. Try not to give too much attention to him when he is having tantrums. I know it is difficult but it gets him lot  of attention. You can also make feelings cards with happy faces , sad faces etc. and talk about that makes him happy, angry,  just get him talking. I think you'll find that after he has talked it out the aggression will decrease. Also get a egg timer for special times with just you and him, even five minutes of you alone.. Find our what is his favourite thing and offer that to him. It may be that his favouite thing is just to talk with you alone.Another idea is to get him to help out around the home and give honest praise . Children like to feel valued and generally a task that he likes and is not too difficult will make him feel like a big boy.Even setting the table is good. see if he is acting out becasue of school. Lots of times children act out their school frustrations at home because they regard it as a safe place. Maybe he is bullied at school. Stickers are great from the Dollar store. Cooking with children is a relaxing activity. Get some refrigerator cookie dough and let him create.Get some shaving cream and a bit of food colourinmg. Place old shower curtain on the table and let him play on it . I use old tupperware bowls and spatulas. Get some dry jello powder and make some environmentally safe glue with flour mixed with a little water. Have him draw his name with a marker or pencil and use Qtips to trace it with the paste , shake dry jello on top and when it dries it is a nice sensory experience with the scent of the jello. This works for hours.Go to the library and get some children's cookbooks and try simple recipes with him. Here is my article. Enjoy!
